A Lifelong Journey
“I’ve been a patient at Peacocks Medical Group for a number of years, but more importantly, more recently since 2019, where the team worked very closely with me, following the amputation I had,” shares Jennifer Seaton.
Born with a congenital deformity, Jennifer's life had been marked by a series of successful surgeries until the amputation, which brought forth unprecedented challenges. For both Jennifer and the Peacocks team, this was uncharted territory. Mark Walbank, Clinical Lead Orthotist, and Craig Dixon, Operations Manager, took on the responsibility of navigating this unique journey with Jennifer.
A Pause in Passion for Sports
“Prior to the amputation, I have always been heavily involved in sports. At school, I played hockey and was captain of the hockey and rounders teams. Sport had been an integral part of who I am. The amputation brought all of that to a halt because I could no longer wear any of the shoes I needed for the sports. That’s where Peacocks Medical Group came into their own, working very closely with me to try and find a way through this,” expresses Jennifer.
For someone accustomed to long-distance walking and an active lifestyle, the amputation posed significant challenges. The inability to sense the end of her foot created complexities during climbs and walks. This is where the expertise and dedication of Mark and Craig became pivotal in Jennifer's journey.
Crafting Solutions for a Meaningful Recovery
“I have always been into long-distance walking, walking every day and being able to walk distances is very important. The infill has been great to put into a walking boot. What it doesn’t enable for me to do is to know where the end of my foot is, as I can’t sense it. If I’m doing a climb, I was talking to Mark and Craig that it’s very difficult to know where to put my foot,” shares Jennifer.
In response to Jennifer's unique challenges, the Peacocks team provided her with a specialist walking boot tailored to the size of her stump. Through attentive listening and problem-solving, they identified the curvature Jennifer needed for optimal push-off, enabling her to regain a foothold and leverage herself up – something unattainable with a standard shoe.
From Loss to Rediscovery
“This has been absolutely brilliant. The way in which Mark and Craig listened to the problems that I have, they found a solution to enable me to carry on with the sports and the interests I have. It’s gone from feeling a huge loss of what’s been important to me to getting that back, and I can get out there and do the things that make me happy,” expresses Jennifer.
